Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is visiting Georgia for the first time. He will open the International Conference “The Role of IP Offices in the National Innovation Ecosystem”, dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”.
Within the visit, Director General of WIPO Mr. Daren Tang visited Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA), where he met with its Chairman Mr. Avtandil Kasradze and familiarized with the GITA activity.
Today, Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), will pay his first official visit to Georgia. On October 12, 2022, Mr. Tang will open the International Conference “The Role of IP Offices in the National Innovation Ecosystem”, dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”.

A delegation of Uzbekistan visited Sakpatenti. Within the working visit, the Uzbek counterparts familiarized with the system of protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin of Georgia and the activity of Sakpatenti in this direction. During the visit to Tbilisi office of Sakpatenti they attended a short lecture course of the Head of “OriGIn Georgia” Mr. David Gabunia, who focused attention on main aspects of protection of GI products and in general the role of this object in the economic, social and cultural development of the country.

In the opening address Ms. Nino Chikovani, Deputy Chairperson of Sakpatenti, spoke about the event and noted that it is very important to have a discussion on the draft law amendments in the public-private dialogue format, which is attended by all stakeholders, from one hand the IPR holders and by other hand authorities responsible on enforcement of those rights.
Today, in renewed format, the two-week Professional Development Program (PDP) on Geographical Indications was launched. The course is jointly organized by Sakpatenti Training Centre and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy, in partnership with the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The program will assist 34 representatives employed in public agencies of 17 countries in deepening practical knowledge and enhancement of professional skills in the relevant field.
Ms. Nino Chikovani, Acting Chairperson of Sakpatenti, Mr. Irakli Kasradze, Acting Head of the Legal Department, and Mr. Merab Kutsia, Head of Department of Inventions and New Varieties and Breeds, held a meeting with representatives of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI), Ms. Zeinab Ghafouri and Mr. Erik Thévenod, within the Georgian-Swiss Intellectual Property Project (GESIP), at the head office of Sakpatenti. The project is implemented with the support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and is aimed to facilitate development of geographical indications protection and patent systems in Georgia.
At
the 15th session of the Advisory Committee on Enforcement (ACE) of
the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held in Geneva, Swiss
Confederation, Mr. Irakli Kasradze, Acting Head of the Legal Department of the
National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti, was elected as the Chair
of the Committee for the period of one year.
H.E. Kelly C. Degnan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Georgia, visited the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – Sakpatenti and held a working meeting with the Center top management.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in remote mode between the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti” and the Central Inspectorate Department for the Protection of Quality and Fraud Repression of Agri-food Products of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies of the Italian Republic (ICQRF). The document, which was signed by Ms. Manana Pruidze, Acting Chairperson of Sakpatenti, and Mr. Felice Assenza, Chief of ICQRF, considers to intensify cooperation and exchange information and experience between the offices in the field of geographical indications.
