On January 11, 2018, legislative amendments, prepared by Sakpatenti, entered into force. The amendments were drafted in relation with fulfilling the obligations under Chapter 9 (Intellectual Property Rights) of Section IV of the Association Agreement between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community and their Member States, of the one part, and Georgia, of the other part, and are aimed at harmonizing the legislation of Georgia in the intellectual property field with the above-mentioned Agreement.
On December 15, 2017, a summary meeting of activities of the WIPO CEBS Regional Group took place in Geneva, which ended the one-year coordination by Georgia of the above-mentioned Regional Group (uniting 18 states of the region). The functions of the Coordinator were fulfilled by a special representative of Sakpatenti -Mrs. Ana Gobechia, Head of International Affairs and Project Management Division.
On January 1, 2018, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) launched a new unified search system – MADRID MONITOR, which allows tracking the status of an international application or trademark registration, and provides access to detailed information on all trademarks registered through the Madrid System.
A turning point in the history of the Madrid System – Indonesia acceded to the Madrid Protocol. The Protocol will enter into force in Indonesia on January 2, 2018, as a result of which local trademark owners of Indonesia will be presented an opportunity, through the Madrid System and a single application, to protect their trademarks in the member states of the Madrid System, whereas member states of the Madrid System will be able to protect their trademarks in Indonesia.
Today, on December 15, 2017, at 21:00 a hackathon – 48-hour marathon - is starting at Sakpatenti. During the event the participants must implement an idea related to the topic of intellectual property rights protection. World intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced as the slogan of the year 2017: “Innovation – Improving Lives” and Intellectual Property Offices of the Member States were invited to organize a competition on the above-mentioned topic. Sakpatenti, as the policy-making body in the IP field in Georgia, organized a competition of a hackathon format, in order to explain to the young generation the importance of the intellectual property protection and develop respect for IP rights.
Today, on December 12, 2017, Workshop on IP Enforcement opened at the Office of the National Intellectual Property Center Sakpatenti. The event, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Sakpatenti, is attended by officials of the customs and investigation services as well as judges. The workshop is led by specialists from Great Britain, Estonia, Moldova, Georgia, and representatives of WIPO and Sakpatenti.

On November 14, 2017, in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, the first round of negotiations took place between the parties of Georgia and Moldova to adopt the text of the Agreement on Mutual Recognition and Protection of Geographical Indications between Georgia and the Republic of Moldova.
On November 7, 2017, a meeting on intellectual property protection and cybersecurity issues took place at the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti. Mr. Nikoloz Gogilidze, Sakpatenti Chairman, and Mr. Loran Siniore, Director, Central and Eastern European Software Assets Management and Compliance, Microsoft, participated in the meeting.
