April 26 is the World Intellectual Property Day, which every year is dedicated to a particular topic. By the decision of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) the topic of the World IP Day in 2017 is innovations, and it is celebrated with the slogan: “Innovation – Improving Lives”.
On April 12, 2017, a meeting was held at Sakpatenti Tbilisi office within the framework of existed cooperation between Sakpatenti and the Georgian Bar Association. At the meeting Sakpatenti Chairman Nikoloz Gogilidze introduced to the Association members planned amendments to be made to the “Trademark Law” of Georgia. The meeting took place in an interactive mode and aimed to hear lawyers opinions regarding the amendments.
From June 9, 2017, Jordan (country code: JO) will officially become the 152nd Contracting State of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
PCT is an international treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
On the basis of PCT it is possible to file a patent application for an invention from one international patent office simultaneously in all PCT Contacting States, which is a more simple and economic way of patent acquisition.
On March 15-17, 2017, within the Sakpatent/WIPO joint project, the Training on Customizing and Tutoring the WIPO Academy General Course on IP (DL-101) was held for trainers of Sakpatenti Training Centre.
Sakpatenti has been informed that organization “IP Direct – International Patent & Trademark Directory” is sending letters to applicants of international trademarks and their representatives, requesting payment of trademark registration/publication fees.
On March 6, 2017, Mr. Nikoloz Gogilidze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti, visited Chisinau, where within the program of strengthening cooperation between Moldova and Georgia in the field of intellectual property, held meetings with Mr. Octavian Apostol, Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property AGEPI and other representatives of the Agency.
On March 2-4, 2017, an Istanbul International Inventions Fair was held, in which National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia Sakpatenti participated, along with 264 organizations from 24 countries. For 4207 registered visitors of the Fair, 324 inventions were presented. The event was organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology of Turkey, International Federation of Inventors Associations (IFIA), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), European Patent Office (EPO) and Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (Turkpatent).
On February 27, 2017, the thirty-third session of the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore was opened.
The Committee’s aim is to closer the WIPO member states representatives positions and reaching final conclusion on the text of international agreement which will ensure the effective protection of traditional cultural expressions (TCEs).
On February 27, 2017, the Millennium Challenge Foundation revealed the winning team of the Millennium Innovation Competition. “Smart Kids” was selected as the winner of the Project “Geological Threats” among thirteen finalist, winners will participate in NASA’s Space Center University educational program. The award ceremony took place at Tbilisi Municipality City Assembly events hall. This year, the second place was granted to two teams - “Borjghalmobili”, with the Project “Moon Rover Engine”, and “17”, with the Project “Magnetic Elevator”.
On December 19-23, 2016, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Intellectual Property Centre of Georgia Sakpatenti organized the second stage of training “Basic Teaching Methodologies” for predefined trainers of the Georgian Intellectual Property Training Center.
